Why Stay Hydrated?

There are many ways of staying healthy such as eating right, exercising, and most important of all, staying hydrated. Why is staying hydrated so important? Your body depends on water to survive, every cell, tissue and organ needs water to work properly. Feeding your body water helps it to maintain its temperature, remove waste and lubricate your joints.

If water is so important, how much should you drink in a day? Well, there is no simple answer to this question as your individual needs depend on many factors such as your personal health, if you are exercising, and even where you live. Most people have probably heard the advice, drink 8 glasses of water a day, and for the most part this is a great goal and starting point to ensure you are getting enough fluids for your body to keep going. Your body itself is also a strong indicator of if you are getting enough fluids, it will tell you when you are thirsty, but it is also a great idea to take sips of water through the day as well.

Is water the only option to keep your body going? Not at all, you don’t have to be stuck just drinking water all day to ensure your hydration levels are met. In addition to drinking water throughout your day, you can drink tea, coffee, juice, milk or even eat fruits and vegetables that are mostly comprised of water such as watermelon and spinach. Just try to stay away from drinks that can be high in sugar as this can provide additional non-beneficial calories to your day.

Here are some great tips on how to stay hydrated!

  • Have water with or before each meal
  • Drink water before, during and after exercise
  • Add some sugarless flavoring to your water or a slice of lemon or lime
  • Keep a cup of water at your desk so you have access to water when your body tells you it is thirsty
  • Set reminders in your phone to drink water – there are apps available as well!
  • Set a daily goal– your goal can be small to start if hydration has been hard for you, all progress is good progress!
  • Challenge a friend to stay hydrated with you

Looking after your body can be a challenge but providing it the hydration it needs is one step in the right direction to keeping your body strong and healthy.
